Volunteers play an essential role in inspiring and engaging our audiences and supporting behind-the-scenes work. Volunteers greet and welcome visitors, provide information and tours, and support staff in a variety of functions.

Opportunities

We have a variety of volunteer programs.

Archaeology

Assist with supervised archaeological research, artifact documentation, and site preservation efforts at Rich Hill.

Cabin Site Interpretation/Storytelling

Engage visitors by sharing stories and historical context about life at Rich Hill through informal interpretation.

Collections

Help organize, document, and care for historic artifacts and archival materials to support preservation and research.

Exhibits

Support the installation, maintenance, and interpretation of exhibits that share Rich Hill’s history with the public.

Friends of Rich Hill Fundraising

Assist with fundraising campaigns, donor outreach, and initiatives that support preservation and programming.

Furnishings

Help care for and maintain historic furnishings inventory to ensure accurate and respectful interpretation of interior spaces.

Gift Shop

Support gift shop operations by assisting visitors, handling sales, and helping manage inventory.

Interior Cleaning

Assist with careful, museum-approved cleaning to help preserve historic interiors and artifacts.

Pollinator Garden

Help plant, maintain, and care for the pollinator garden while supporting local ecosystems.

Programs & Special Events

Support educational programs and special events by assisting with setup, logistics, and visitor engagement.

Publicity

Help promote Rich Hill through outreach, writing, photography, social media, and marketing support.

Security

Assist with visitor safety and site oversight during public hours and special events.

Tour Guides

Lead engaging tours that interpret the history, architecture, and stories of Rich Hill for visitors.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is the time commitment? We generally ask for a commitment of at least two shifts per month (approx. 4 hours per shift), though this varies by role. Seasonal event support offers more flexible, ad-hoc scheduling.
    Do I need a history background? Not at all. While an interest in history is helpful, we provide comprehensive training for all roles, including detailed materials on the Rich Hill site and its history.
    Is there an age requirement? Volunteers must be at least 18 years old for most independent roles. We do have a Junior Docent program for students ages 14-17 during the summer months.
    How do I apply for future openings? When applications re-open, a form will be available on this page. You can subscribe to our newsletter below to be notified immediately when new volunteer cohorts are being formed.
